Celebrating our wonderful nurses

On International Nurses Day, we celebrate the wonderful and hard work of our nurses. We thank them for caring for us, helping us and being there for us.

We are blessed to have highly trained and skilled nursing staff to care for our residents. Today, we share the stories of Julie, our Cumberland View Retirement Village nurse and Manpreet, Cumberland View Aged Care’s Nurse Unit Manager on what nursing means to them.

Why did you choose to do nursing as your chosen career?
My choice of career was heavily influenced by my childhood reading material growing up in England. ‘Nurse Nancy’ in the ‘Twinkle’ comic and the ‘Sue Barton’ scenes have a lot to answer for.

What does nursing mean to you?
Being a registered nurse for 36 years, I have been lucky enough to have always been employed. Nursing offers so many and varied areas to work in and I have always felt appreciated by my patients.

What do you enjoy most about working at Cumberland View Retirement Village?
At Cumberland View Retirement Village, I love the sense of community. I was quickly welcomed into the village by both the residents and staff. Despite it being an independent living facility, the residents are grateful for our advice, care and ability to respond to emergencies.

What is most challenging about being a nurse?
The ever-changing world in which we live including adapting to pandemics, increased workloads, staff shortages, and increasing violence and aggression towards nurses in hospitals.

What is your most special nursing memory?
The fun and laughter which I share with my colleagues, even during the stressful, tough and sad times, we could always make each other smile. Plus, I love hearing the stories from my patients of their wonderful and eventful lives.

The staff, the residents and the environment. Cumberland View Aged Care is my second home and the staff members are like my family. I feel very privileged to work with a beautiful group of people, who despite all the challenging times, stayed together and continued to thrive.

What is most challenging about being a nurse?
Keeping everyone safe and healthy during the pandemic.

What is your most special nursing memory?
So many, but the one that always makes me emotional was being hugged by a beautiful lady few moments before she passed away.
